Jamcorder Review – Is It the Keyboard Gadget You Need or a Dud?

I saw it on Instagram and I had to have it. As a techy and piano player, the Jamcorder was irresistible.

Did it meet my high expectations? Let's discuss.

What Is the Jamcorder?

Jamcorder is a small device that connects your digital piano or keyboard to their Jamcorder app (available on iOS, Android and Mac).

Jamcorder

The Jamcorder is vvery small and can attach to any device with included double sided tape.

The app, which is free, lets players do several things.

1. See the notes you're playing. You can see the notes you play in a cascading style. See the keys your pressing in real time and then see them on replays.

2. Record and listen back to what you're playing. Play anything and rewind to hear it. The replay will play on your device, not from the keyboard. You can also listen to them anywhere, whether you're at the keyboard or not.

3. Log you're total playtime and days practiced. This was the biggest reason I wanted the Jamcorder. I had been manually logging my practice times in other apps, but this does it for you. Not only that, it records only the time you are actually playing. Even if the app isn't open, just click the "sync" button on the side and whatever you played will be sent to your app.

4. Save recordings and bookmark them. If you're a composer, you can save your pieces and name them. This is wildly convenient. Playing something just for fun and you want to remember it for later? Jamcorder does that.

You can bookmark something you just played by hitting the top 5 black keys twice (a really neat feature). Just save the piece and you have it forever.

I'm building a library of all the songs I know.

Jamcorder Bookmark

The device stores over 25,000 hours, which would be 2.5x the rule of thumb "10,000 hours to mastery" concept. You will not go over this amount 🙂

Note: Don't buy the Jamcorder for an acoustic piano! It is only for digital pianos that have USB or MIDI inputs and outputs (which is standard on almost all of them).

Is the Jamcorder Worth It?

My answer is an emphatic absolutely!

Even when priced at $129, I think this is a bargain.

If you were to buy it simply for the motivation and tracking, it would be worth it.

If you were to buy it just for recording and bookmarking pieces, it would be worth it.

You get all of those perks 🙂

I am not affiliated with Jamcorder, I'm just a huge fa
